Post of the Year -OR- The Last 40 summed up in one blogpost

An Open Letter to Conservatives

Jaw-dropping in its brutal truths. Each allegation backed up; fully sourced. Laying out the utter ugliness of our present, how we got here and sage advice for cleaning up the mess.

"You’re going to have to come up with a platform that isn’t built on a foundation of cowardice: fear of people with colors, religions, cultures and sex lives that differ from yours; fear of reform in banking, health care, energy; fantasy fears of America being transformed into an Islamic nation, into social/commun/fasc-ism, into a disarmed populace put in internment camps; and more. But you have work to do even before you take on that task.

Your party — the GOP — and the conservative end of the American political spectrum has become irresponsible and irrational. Worse, it’s tolerating, promoting and celebrating prejudice and hatred. Let me provide some examples – by no means an exhaustive list — of where the Right as gotten itself stuck in a swamp of hypocrisy, hyperbole, historical inaccuracy and hatred.

If you’re going to regain your stature as a party of rational, responsible people, you’ll have to start by draining this swamp:

The gloves come off and the bitch slapping begins..

It's as daunting and impressive an effort as ever undertaken by any journalist I've read in recent memory and worthy of viral distribution.

The indictment is all right there in black/white and hyperlinks.

Yes, echoing TG, THANKS for including this from Russ. I read
it days ago, not sure why I didn't
comment then, maybe I had to leave
my apt. or was distracted.

But a larger, more unhappy truth
underlies these Russ-cited embarrassments: too many people are
electing those who most resemble them, people they can "have a beer
with", etc. Where is the humility and the objective realization that
we need to elect people BETTER than
ourselves, else WE should run??
(--Horrors!)

Democracy is not what we have here,
as I've said before, not even the
Greeks, with their caste/slave system, had it. But the worst features of rule by rabble ARE appearing, and that worries me,
for our children's sake if not our
own.

Still, I have hopes, forlorn though
they may be....

Best, A.
