Sunshine -OR- The Missing Piece

March comes in like a schizophrenic berserker in full schitz and body armor... 50° 20° 0° 35° 18° 44°. Cloudy, drizzly, rainy, snow, freezing rain. Lather, rinse, repeat.. HEY! What's that? S-U-N? Right. Wobbly as a newborn foal. Thin, spindly rays offering a mere hint of the illusion of warmth.

I'll take it! Sure we had a brief spate of almost 70° in mid-February that made quick work of the massive piles of snow from the blizzard of 2011, but, if anything, yo-yo-ing between deep winter and early summer repetitively for an entire month can be a mellow-harshing ride.

So, in the Chicago area, the arrival of March is a psychological exercise in delusions. Fed by the guessers. Fooled by forecasts. Faint rumblings of the baseball season to come. Willing to believe, desperate to believe. Knowing full well that measurable snowfall is as, if not more, likely for Opening Day than anything resembling the images from Florida or Arizona's spring training.

March in Chicago is the epitome of irrational exuberance clashing with conscious reality. Faceless sherpas in anoraks and fur share the sidewalks with shorts-clad flip-flop wearers. Each thinking the other the biggest fools around.

It is in this schismatic atmosphere that citizens are asked to choose their leaders for the next four years. What the hell were they thinking?

What could possibly go wrong?

Dear Watcher,

"What could possibly go wrong?" Oh,
I dunno, everything?? But let's not
wring our hands excessively over
any doom appearing in a vague shadow
over the hill....

I wish I could still get excited by pro sports. I was very athletic in high school, loved the Bears and the Bulls back in the day. As to the Cubs, "Corky" Sosa ruined it for me, along with the many scandals among many different sports teams. How about those terrific high schoolers? They play
pretty well, may be too young for
corruption to have tarnished them.

Best to you and yours, A.

Yes, one must always beware the slides of March.

Watcher and Cletis,
I admire your wit and punning.
Keep it up!
