Over, under, sideways down OR Buy a fucking clue.

The question asked:

What's wrong with the public school system that you wouldn't want your kids to attend?

And on a side note, what does one make of a community that feels public schools are inadequate and thus would rather send their kids to private schools or move than improve public schools from within? I mean, if EVERYONE who pulled their kids out of public schools kept them in, wouldn't the public schools get better? Just a question, not an accusation (not that this is directed at anyone specific anyway).

I won't call this an answer. More of an observation? The question itself isn't answerable. UNIVERSALLY.

It's not just schools. It's a symptom of a more systemic shift in marketing strategy across the board. Self-contained, self-sufficient, stand-alone, "personalized" living. Life-style. Tied to branding and symbols which convey a specific status.

The shift to our current "society" began with a shift in thinking. That lead to a change in expectations and the methodology of achieving one's "objective". We were once an agrarian society. We became an industrialized society. We are now technically a technology society. Superficially. We are still reliant on farms and industry, but our identity is now culture driven. Work. Honest work is our highest and best function.

The cumulative effects on an interdependent "free" society once past a hypothetical tipping point are beginning to expose the short-sightedness of the scheme. If we're not too far gone from our pioneer past, the need to circle the wagons and rebuild our alliances could bring things back into balance.

There's serious work to be done. It will require removal of a lot of clowns and a radical altering in how we project our values, regard worth, aim and allocate our resources... On personal levels the majority, as usual, are ahead of the curve.
They've made adjustments, sacrifices and have learned to adapt. What they haven't been able to overcome is the tenacity with which unearned worth has pooled among not just unproductive, but completely non-productive and counter-productive elements of our business model.
